Panama Red strain is best described as an old-school cannabis classic. Originating from Panama, this pure sativa rose to stardom in the late 1960’s thanks to its speedy and intense effects, bordering on psychedelic. As cannabis cultivation matured, Panama Red strain, which has a lengthy flowering time of at least 11 weeks, was left behind for faster growing strains and increased profits. However, those who fondly recall days of its prominence love its smooth medicating experience and loftily contemplate its revival. If you can get your hands on this sentimental throwback, do not hesitate to groove down memory lane and enjoy the ride.

PANAMA RED STRAIN REVIEW

This is a classic, 100% sativa cannabis strain, being popular within the ‘60’s. Its deep green buds display fiery red pistils throughout. It emits a smell and produces a taste that is both reminiscent of herbal tea and/or wood, with undertones of fresh soil.

Panama Red is a landrace strain, being named after the country it was first bred within.

The THC level of Panama Red averages at 10% with some crops reaping in at 16%. Though it doesn’t have the highest THC levels out there, it’s renowned for its classic sativa effects of boosting energy, inducing creativity, and uplifting the spirits as all negativity leaves both the body and mind. This strain has been known to help with stomach issues and increase appetite as well. Panama Red is a great strain for both novice and veteran consumers alike.panama red strain review

Negative effects of Panama Red include headache, anxiousness, and dizziness when too much is consumed at once.

Growers should note  takes up to eleven weeks to fully flower. Because of its long cultivation time, its popularity from the 60’s slowly decreased with time, being replaced with faster growing strains that are more profitable. panama red strain allbud

While landrace strains are, in reality, the building blocks of modern cannabis varieties, these strains actually offer a unique experience of their own. Unfortunately, only a handful of users can really say that they have once enjoyed a pure landrace weed.

Most modern cannabis users are more likely to opt for the recent varieties that are specially bred to impress seasoned users with their sensational potency and overwhelming effects. For that reason, some landrace strains have lost their fame over the years. However, this does not change the fact they have once taken the cannabis world by storm.

This is basically the story of the landrace strain called Panama Red. This pure Sativa strain has once belonged to the list of the most sought-after cannabis varieties of its time. Eventually, the strain lost its charm due to certain reasons and has never earned back the level of popularity that it once had.

Nonetheless, every user who had the chance to smoke Panama Red can attest tothe strain’s delightful high. Now, for prospective users of Panama Red, here is what you need to know about this classic strain.

As its name suggests, Panama Red is a landrace strain that originated from Panama. This Central American weed became popular among cannabis users starting from the late 1960’s to 1990’s due to its typical Sativa effects.

Panama Red is known for its lengthy flowering period, moderate yield and significantly lower THC levels. While these traits are not necessarily unfavorable during its time, these are now considered as some of the major drawbacks of any cannabis variety.

Hence, Panama Red is now rarely found in most dispensaries. In fact, the seeds of strain are said to be available only from its original breeder, Reeferman. For the curious ones, the strain is now mostly found in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California.

About Panama Red

Panama Red is a Sativa strain that first gained popularity back in the 1960s and was widely loved up through the nineties. Providing a mellow cerebral high that is slightly on the euphoric and energetic side, the strain is a pretty classic Sativa. Still, Panama Red does have some relaxing bodily effects. A few users also feel much more creative after using the strain. This Sativa will leave most users eyes drier than their mouths but may also cause headaches, anxiety and paranoia.

The strain is ideal for daytime use to cope with stress and anxiety, or to alleviate the oppressing effects of depression. The slight body high of Panama Red may help make some mild aches and pains more manageable. They may also help fight eating disorders such as anorexia. It may also be good for relieving users of inflammation and nausea.

Panama Red is a pure landrace Sativa strain named after the country it came from and seeds are now really only available from the original breeder Reeferman. The decline of the strain’s popularity is due to it’s long flowering time that ranges between 11 and 12 weeks and it’s moderate yield with a low THC count. Even so, for many the strain remains a favorite for its ease of growth both indoors and out.

Panama Red Strain Review

A strain best paired with their coffee and some sunny-side-up, Panama Red is a classic Sativa that satisfies a craving for a fully energizing breakfast. A bowl of this ganja is all that is needed to equip for the long day ahead.

Its name is a dead giveaway to its origin at Panama, and this Central American weed is known to have spread its flower power back in the late 1960s. However, its popularity has shot down over the past few decades due to its rather lengthy growing time, but the high it delivers is just as groovy as it was back in its heydays.

With a THC reaching a moderate strength of up to 16%, it’s a friendly bud that both veterans and novice-users can use to pump up the system for motivation.

Odor and Flavors

Grounding and heart-warming, Panama Red permeates a deep incense-like aroma with an earthy note at its base. It comes close to the mix of spicy and herbal tones of ginger tea, but hints of honey drop round out the aroma with a subtle sweetness that make it pleasant overall.

Its flavors are just as refreshing as it smells, with the smoke swirling smoothly in the lungs. As such, expect to toke this without triggering coughing fits.

Effects

Nowadays, the cannabis industry is filled with highly potent strains stacked against one after another. Many of these are also Indica varieties. Those looking to simply float in a relaxed and refreshed state of mind may not have many options, that’s why Panama Red has risen from the grave and may be setting up its comeback.

It has enough kick to satisfy Sativa-enthusiasts needs: upbeat, energizing and uplifting without the risk of veering off into a mental race. As such, users are able to enjoy mellow kind of drive, one that sets of a smooth and comfortable ride throughout the day.

Moreover, it probes at the creative side of smokers, prompting a free association of ideas to flow in an endless stream. It also improves perception, allowing those to bask in their surroundings with amplified sights and sounds.

Such mental sharpness makes for an ideal smoke for those wanting to achieve an active day. However, it does have some psychedelic tendencies that make this better used for personal endeavors – whether it’s completing an unfinished project or spending a day out with friends.

Either way, expect the good vibes to last a long time. Despite being pure Sativa, the high tends to taper off into a mild relaxation that eases the body. After being fired up on the onset, settling into its soothing effects makes for a perfect ending.

Adverse Reactions

Due to its moderate potency, users are more likely to experience cottonmouth and dry eyes. This is commonly found in other variants and can easily be soothed by simply taking glasses of water. It is unlikely to cause much psychological effects, although on rare cases, beginners who may be especially sensitive to effects of THC may still be vulnerable to paranoia or dizziness.

Medical Use and Benefits

Panama Red is a positive influence in that it possesses excellent medicinal values. For one, this old timey strain can handle its own weight against stress. Throwing anxieties and the hassles of mundane life to the wind, even those with depression or anxiety can be liberated from the confines of mental woes. Furthermore, the focused high also helps sufferers of ADHD retain concentration on single tasks, to allow for a productive time.

The boost in energy is also known to help relieve symptoms of fatigue, and the high slips into mellow body effects that eminently relieve minor aches such as headaches or migraines. Indeed, this strain equips its users with all the right tools to fully enjoy the day.

Growing Panama Red

One of the main reasons why Panama Red has fallen behind is its rather arduous growing process. Its lengthy flowering time make it less ideal for the modern, fast-paced market.

Additionally, those looking to snag its seeds can only find it from the original breeder, Reeferman. Of course, being a pure Sativa means it grows at a height of up to 200 cm, making this challenging to manage indoors. As such, trimming it is necessary if users want to cultivate it in restricted spaces.

On that note, it takes 11 to 12 weeks of flowering time for it to yield about 450 to 550 grams per square meter.

Taking it outdoors would require a tropical climate, which also makes it quite difficult as users should keep it away from humidity or frost. Harvest time is usually ready by late October with an average yield of 550 grams per plant.

Effects

Although Panama Red has now been overshadowed by modern cannabis varieties, it is still considered as a delightful strain that both veteran and noviceusers will appreciate.

With its significantly lower THC content that can reach a maximum of 16%, the strain can be enjoyed by all types of users without the fear of any overwhelming effects. Being a Sativa-dominant strain, Panama Red boast of a series of cerebral upshots.

To wit, the strain delivers a mellow yet distinctly happy and euphoric onset that can boost a user’s energy and stimulate creative thoughts at the same time. Some users would describe its overall high as speedy and intense with psychedelic tendencies.

Due to Panama Red’s energetic high, it is a great strain choice for social gatherings or any activity that requires active social behavior. Surprisingly, the strain also offers a mild relaxation to finish off its rather lively onset.

Panama Red gives off an interesting combination of earthy and fruity scents. The strain’s overall fragrance can be likened to a pungent earth smell with subtle hints of the fruity citrus aroma of grapefruit.

Flavors

To complement its happy high, users are rewarded with a delicious concoction of flavors that can be described as herbal and spicy with some intriguing notes of tropical fruits reminiscent to the sweet and citrus taste of grapefruit.

Adverse reactions

Considering the low THC concentration of Panama Red, it is less likely to cause psychological side effects. To wit, users are more likely to experience dry mouth and may not notice any sign of adverse reaction.

Although, in rare occasions, users may experiencing drying of the eyes, paranoia, headache, and dizziness.

Medical

Due to Panama Red’s impressively uplifting properties, it is widely known to effectively fight stress and even help other patients combat the symptoms of depression. Other sources would argue that the strain can also benefit patients with ADHD and other types of mood disorders.

Furthermore, the strain may also aid patients dealing with fatigue and consequently provide temporary relief to mild pain caused by simple headaches and migraines.

Growing

Considering the modern standards of cannabis cultivation, Panama Red certainly falls behind. Although the strain can be grown indoor or outdoor, it is not the easiest strain to cultivate. In fact, its outdoor cultivation requires a tropical or sub-tropical climate for the plant to thrive. Hence, it becomes preferable for growers to keep the plant indoors or in a greenhouse environment.

At the same time, due to its long flowering period and moderate yield, most growers are less likely to choose the strain for commercial growing. Thus, affecting the present supply and demand of Panama Red.

Flowering Time

Indoors

As mentioned, the strain’s flowering period can be quite lengthy. To be exact, it can take 77 to 84 days or approximately 11 to 12 weeks to finish flowering. The yield is not even that rewarding. Growers are only expected to harvest about per square meter.

Outdoors

Regardless if the plant is cultivated in its ideal growing environment, Panama Red still needs more time to mature. Late October is the typical harvest time of strain and its total yield is likely to be around 16 ounces or more per plant.

Cannabis Strain Guides: Panama Red Strain Review

Panama Red cannabis is a legendary old school weed strain from Central America. Named for its distinctive long red hairs it is a sweet tasting weed with a full on, psychedelic high. It is said to be very similar to Columbian Punta Roja but with a much more intense hit.

Panama Red belongs to a generation of strains that are on the brink of extinction, as newer, more potent breeds take its place. Its seeds are quite difficult to get hold of, but there are some seed banks that offer hybrids, most notably crosses of Panama Red with White Widow or Skunk. If you do manage to get some Panama Red seeds they will make an excellent breeding stock, bringing pure, old school Sativa genetics to modern hybrids.

Panama Red Seeds Information

Panama Red is a pure sativa strain with an amazing history that stretches all the way back to the 1960s and 70s, when hippies roamed the American continent. Back then, Panama Red was “the bomb”, as it had extremely potent effects, bordering on the hallucinogenic. With a reputation like that, it’s really a wonder no one seems to be growing it anymore.

However, there are reasons for this. First of all, Panama Red genetics are pretty much locked in the confines of a remote island of the coast of -you guessed it!- Panama. For those who don’t know, Panama is located right in the middle between North and South America and connects the Pacific with the Atlantic ocean. Let’s take a look at some of the history behind the fascinating story of Panama Red.

The Rise And Fall Of The Panama Red

Being just above the equator, Panama has a tropical climate with the temperatures hovering around 25 to 30ºC year round. The weather patterns are quite different depending on the coast you are in, but hundreds of islands and coves make Panama a great tourist destination.

Right up until the 70s, Panama was a leading exporter of some of the best cannabis in the world. Most of its product ended up in the US and European markets. Panama Red was grown mostly on the Pacific coast, which has more fertile lands. The cannabis domination lasted until locals realized that cocaine trade was much more profitable and switched their “business model”. Cannabis crops were stripped to make room for labs, camps and hidden landing strips for the cartel planes.

However, some locals continued to grow marijuana, mostly for domestic use. The base of those growers was on a small island group of the south coast of Panama, called the Pearl islands. Nowadays a luxury retreat for wealthy jet-setters, back then the islands were a literal pirate have, where illegal activities could stay undisturbed. The climate was perfect for sativas, as the temperatures, soil and humidity were ideal for their development. Over the course of the years, the genetic pool of the Panama Red strain remained locked in the archipelago of the 200+ islands.

Acquiring Panama Red

Panama Red was one of the most sought after cannabis varieties in the world. Old school stoners still remember it fondly, while newer generations might have a chance to acquire a hybrid. The seeds of Panama Red are said to be available only from its original breeder, Reeferman. For the curious ones, the strain is now mostly found in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California.

Panama Red In Pop Culture

The Adventures of Panama Red was the title of a country rock album released in 1973 by the New Riders of the Purple Sage. We don’t know how close the band was to the weed strain, but the actual Panama Red song is not so bad!

Panama Red Seeds Strain Lineage

The downfall of strains like the Panama Red is also a reflection of how our preferences change throughout the years. Pure landrace strains are high quality, but not really strong by today’s standards. Breeders prefer to mix them and breed highly potent varieties, designed to wow the crowds with their insane amounts of THC.

The high from Panama Red weed is pure Sativa. The take off is instant and very strong. The effects are visual and trippy, setting both the pulse and the mind racing. Although this legendary high is sought by Sativa heads the world over, its intensity means it may be best avoided by those prone to paranoia or anxiety.

Growing Panama Red Seeds

By modern standards, the Panama Red is not at all that potent: It produces about 10-15% of THC, which was great in the 70s, but kinda disappointing nowadays. However, potency is not the reason you should try growing this strain.

Like most Sativas, Panama Red marijuana is a vigorous plant that will grow tall, stretching during both the vegetative and the flowering phases. It will thrive in the grow room but is truly happiest outdoors, although you should only consider this if you live in a tropical or semi-tropical climate.

A typical pure sativa, this plant is rather slow, flowering at about 80 days from seed.

Growing Indoors

It is perfectly feasible to grow this strain in the grow room, however its flowering period will test your patience. Panama Red and its hybrids will flower at about 12 weeks from seed, while the yield is less than impressive.

Growing Outdoors

This plant will thrive outdoors if introduced to a suitable climate, but it will take even more time to flower! Expect to harvest a yield of about 400 gr (16 oz) per plant in late October.

Taste, Smell And Effects

This strain is what you would expect from a plant that comes straight from the hippie era: Mellow and cerebral, with some hints of bodily relaxation. Expect a burst in your creativity levels and a feeling of euphoria. On the downside, this strain is known to cause red eyes and dry mouth. Overall, it is a welcome change from the norm of “dank THC-filled strains”, and a great choice for those who want to experience a slight buzz.

The smell of Panama Red is earthy with fruity undertones. There are also slight hints of citrus there. Taste-wise, the Panama Red is delicious with herbal and spicy tastes overpowering the palate.

Classic buzz, love that it is all sativa and not unrealistic THC levels.

  2. TheHazeMan (verified owner)

    laughed my ass off !!!

  3. moisekush22 (verified owner)

Purchased from delysidcannabissupplies.com: nice smaller sized buds and not as loose as a typical sativa. Smell: definitely sweet with a little bit of citrus. Has that old school earthy bud smell. Crumble: kinda dry batch so it ground poorly. I was left with a lot of keif looking stuff. Burn: because it was dry, it burned faster and harsher than usual. Taste: pretty much mirrored the smell, a little skunky. High: I’m not a huge sativa fan and tend to lean indica most days, but that being said, I enjoyed Panama. It left me feeling up and talkative.
